HEALTH AND SAFETY POLICY

The Nipigon District Memorial Hospital and its senior management team are committed to providing and maintaining a safe and health work environment for its staff, patients/residents, physicians, volunteers, visitors, and contractors.  The Hospital believes that an effective Health and Safety Program is a cooperative effort on the part of senior management, supervisors, workers, unions, students and the OH&S Committee.

Each worker is responsible for protecting his/her own safety by utilizing safe work procedures and practices established by the Hospital, safety legislation, by reporting all unsafe and unhealthy conditions and, where ever possible, eliminating risks and hazards. 

The Hospital . . .

• recognizes all applicable government acts, regulations, standards and guidelines are a minimal  requirement and strive to meet or exceed these requirements

• Recognizes that the incorporation and implementation of proven health and safety principles and practices is the key to providing responsible management and that it is the Hospital’s responsibility to maintain a safe work environment.  The Hospital will take every reasonable precaution to ensure a healthy and safe work environment

• Recognizes that supervisors have the responsibility to ensure that safe and healthy work conditions are maintained in his/her assigned work area

• Recognizes that it is the worker’s responsibility to follow safe work procedures and practices

• Recognizes the internal responsibility system to be senior management staff, supervisors and workers working together safely and reporting  all unsafe working conditions, incidents, injuries and/or near misses

• Recognizes its role in the OH&S Committee and works collectively with the committee

• Recognizes the effectiveness and value of an Early and Safe Return to Work Program

 


 

This policy will be reviewed annually and the content evaluated for relevance and understanding by staff, the OH&S Committee and the CEO.  The OH&S Committee will audit the policy and determine that programs are in place to meet the statements contained in this policy.

This policy will be signed by the CEO and posted on the OH&S bulletin board and at the facility entrance.
