Medical Day Care Program

What does the program do?

Medical Day Care is a daytime program for adults over 65 years of age that will help them to maintain their health and independence. Our health care professionals are here to provide socialization, entertainment, recreation and exercise through various engaging activities and outings. The program offers reassurance and education for the family and the client. Our other goal is to provide respite for the caregiver.

 

Admission Criteria

  • Sitting tolerance to permit attendance two times weekly.
  • Willingness to participate.
  • Minimum attention span of 20 minutes.
  • Behavior conducive to group settings.
  • Ability of client to undertake supervised/assisted activities of daily living.

How to Enroll

The patient's doctor completes and signs the applications. The Activity Coordinator will contact the family to arrange a convenient time to do an assessment.

Place

The program takes place in the Activity Room at the Nipigon Hospital. Space in the program is limited and applications are approved on an individual basis. Smoking is not permitted within the facility.


Staffing

Health care professionals may include Registered Nurses, Registered Practical Nurses, Personal Support Workers, Physiotherapists,  Dietary Counselors. The Activity Coordinator will organize individual professional care.


Activities

Recreational, social, health monitoring, occupational therapy and physiotherapy as needed, outings and celebrations.

 

Important Information

  • The client is responsible for providing their own medications and those medications must be stored in a dosette. The staff will remind the client to self-administer.
  • The program runs various days of the week from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Attendance must be arranged in advance through the Activity Coordinator.
  • Transportation must be arranged by the client and/or family. The Handi Van may be available, call 877-3026 extension 221.
