Hope for the suffering, the dying, the bereaved

Palliative Care is the active, compassionate care given a terminally ill patient at a time when his/her disease is no longer responding to treatment.

Terminally ill patients have very special needs. In order to ensure that these needs are fully met, the Nipigon District Memorial Hospital has a Palliative Care Committee.

This Committee is made up of caring staff members from various departments within the hospital, and also includes clergy and volunteers. Through this Committee, the patient is ensured continuous, active, compassionate care. This care is, of course, extended to the patient's family as well.

At this very special time of life, a patient has emotional, social and spiritual needs as well as physical needs.

Our Palliative Care Committee is supportive in all these areas. We are prepared to provide care, teaching information and a shoulder to lean on.

We believe that it is vital to work with the patient and the patient's family together to provide the best possible quality of life for the patient.

If you or your family would benefit from any of this, or if you would just like more information about Palliative Care, please contact your physician or any staff member.

Reflexology

Reflexology

Reflexology is a natural healing art based on the principle that there are reflexes in the hands and feed which correspond to every part, gland and organ of the body. Through application of pressure on these reflexes, reflexology relieves tension, improves circulation and promotes the natural function of the related areas of the body.

Therapeutic Touch

Therapeutic Touch

Therapeutic Touch is a contemporary interpretation of several ancient healing practices that are based on learned skills for consciously directing or sensitively modulating human energies.

Therapeutic Touch has to do only with human energies and its practice specifically concerns the therapeutic use of the functions of the human energy field. Therefore, much of the work that the person practicing Therapeutic Touch does, arises from a centered stated of consciousness that has its focus of concern, the natural dynamics of the human energy field, rather than the contractual touch or manipulation of tissues, as in massage, for instance.

However, Therapeutic Touch can work in conjunction with all traditional as well as contemporary healing and helping modalities.

Reiki

Reiki

Reiki, an ancient Japanese art of healing, was discovered by Dr. Mikao Usui at the end of the nineteenth century. Reiki (pronounced Ray Kee) means Universal Life energy.

During a Reiki session the client will normally be lying, fully clothed, on a massage table. If preferred, the client can be seated in a chair. the gentle touch of Reiki is applied to various points on the body.

Reiki brings your body into a balanced energy state, promotes total relaxation, accelerates your body's own ability to heal itself and functions on all.
