We believe that clients and their families have the right and responsibility to become fully involved in the planning and care of their loved ones.

A Respite Admission supports the Caregiver(s) by providing temporary relief. This transfer of temporary care to the Nipigon Hospital can be for a variety of reasons including vacation, medical reasons, or for a much needed rest for the caregiver.

What is Respite?

A Respite admission is a preplanned admission for a client who may require or benefit from a short stay at the Nipigon Hospital and is expected to return to their home in the community within a specified period of time.

Applying for Respite

A client may apply for a maximum of 90 days or 13 weeks of Respite care each year. Starting with 1st day of stay The recommended minimum length of stay per admission is 1 week, but can be increased to a maximum of 30 days per admission. A variety of health care staff will care for your needs including RN's, RPN's and Activity Coordinator.

Applications for Respite are initiated through your family physician, or yourself. A representative from Community Care Access Centre will contact you to complete the application process. Applications will then be submitted to Placement Co-ordination Services at 1-800-626-5406.

What to Expect Upon Admission

On admission the client must bring their medications from home in the original containers (pill bottles). The purchase and delivery of any new medications prescribed during a Respite stay is the responsibility of the family.

Please have all items of clothing labeled prior to admission. Personal hygiene products must also be brought from home.

Valuable articles are considered the responsibility of the client and it is suggested that these be left at home. Should it be necessary to bring your valuables with you, ie. hearing aids, glasses, small amount of money, the hospital will, upon request, store valuables for safekeeping.

A phone is available at bedside for local calls.
